Could Fairplex Park be a replacement for Hollywood Park?

In recent years there has been continued speculation that Fairplex Park could eventually replace the aging Hollywood Park race track. The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) has not commented on the speculation.

Craig Favel, executive vice President of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has said publicly that he believes that if Hollywood Park were to lose racing dates or discontinue racing all together. Then Fairplex Park would be a likely replacement.

Fairplex already serves as a training facility for many California based runners and is looking to expand its training to a year round facility.

Fairplex has a nice central location and could be an excellent alternative for the future of Horse Racing in California. The track would however need to undergo expansion and renovation to accommodate the larger crowds, that a switch could potentially attract.

The track has drawn up plans to expand the main track to nearly a mile and also add an inner turf course. The track would have an unusual pear shape. The plans also call for adding 1,600 stalls and a renovation of the grandstands. The cost of the project is projected at around $55 - $60 million dollars.

This is what they would like to do, will it happen?

Only time will tell. But it would make sense for racing in California.
